Why Do The First Few Years Make Such A Difference To Your Child’s Future Intelligence & Success?
A child’s brain forms over one million neural connections every second during early development. For example, in the time it takes to read this sentence, approximately 40 to 50 million new neural connections are created. This rapid synaptogenesis occurs mainly within the first two years of life (Huttenlocher & Dabholkar, 1997).
Following this phase, the brain undergoes synaptic pruning, a process where unused neural connections are selectively eliminated to improve neural efficiency (Chechik, Meilijson, & Ruppin, 1998). Synaptic pruning typically intensifies between ages 2 and 10 (Gogtay et al., 2004).
